Leeds Cross Cultural Book Fair 2013 Report

I went to the Leeds Cross Cultural Book Fair on Friday to try and sell some comics. It was in the St John's Centre, on a balcony and in a cafe. The organisers and cafe staff were very nice and friendly, they brought us free coffee, cakes and crisps all day, so that was great. I was worried it would be way too hot, but it wasn't too bad. It got a bit stuffy in the afternoon so I had to keep wandering about so as not to fall asleep.
It was very quiet for visitors but I managed to sell enough comics to cover all my costs of getting there so I was happy with that. Thanks to everyone who came along to have a look, or buy my comics! I wonder if it was busier on the Saturday (as it was a two day event) but I had to go do a market. If you didn't come along, or missed me, why not buy some of my comics from my website.

'RhiZome' Anthology Nearly Finished

Me and Kyle's sci-fi / fantasy anthology 'RhiZome' is nearly finished now. It's looking very good, I've just finished all my scanning and cleaning of pages for it today. It's going to have stories in by me, Kyle, John Robbins and Max Mose. If anyone else has done a story for it please let me know this week. It should be out in a month or two. Here's the RhiZome tumblr  which will show pages from everyone soon. The comic should be about 48 pages long or so.

Jim Medway - Playing Out

I really enjoyed Jim Medway's 'Playing Out'. It's for sale here, from Blank Slate.

It's a really good looking book, nice and big, like a European album size. It's about three kids, Connor, Kieran and Jamal, wandering around Manchester at the end of the Summer holidays. Connor is the youngest and is going to be starting big school after the holidays. They walk around the shops, getting thrown out of most places for not buying anything and look at all the 'weirdoes'. The drawings great and its cool to recognise all the places. I always like Jim's cat people and the book really captures the particular day in time very well. Highly recommended.

Michael Kupperman - Tales Designed to Thrizzle Volume 2

Here's the second hardback volume of Michael Kupperman's 'Tales Designed to Thrizzle'. I really like these. They might seem very quick to read at first, but you can flip through them again and again, laughing at different bits each time. This volume has the long story 'Quinception' in it, which might well be his best work yet, and makes the book worth buying all on its own. I also really laughed at some of his fake comics covers, especially 'The Turducken Fuckers'. Highly recommended.
